Day 10: Salad

Day 10:  Camera Controls, Shallow DOF

I'm not so happy with this for a few reasons.  First, I don't think I got the DOF quite shallow enough for the category.  Also, it seems a little too dark, the color is a little too yellow, and the blueberry in front has a big shadow on the front of it.  But I'm hungry, and I'm going to eat that salad instead of fixing/redoing the photo!

  1. Lovely food shot. I know what you mean about the brightness and yellowness. I think the DoF is certainly shallow enough

  2. What were your settings and lens? I know 2.8 looks different with my 60 mm macrolens from my 17-50 lens.
If you don't like the yellow cast and you shot raw it is not hard to adjust in photoshop (also in elements) and plain easy in lightroom.

  3. The yellow cast is probably from ambient tungsten lighting in the room, and the wrong colour balance setting on your camera. RAW processing can go a long way to fixing that up, but it's better to get the colour balance adjusted in camera. Saves a lot of time.

It's a good attempt at shallow DoF, and I love the colours of all the goodies you have in it. A reflector (like just a piece of paper) might have helped light up the blueberry a bit from below...

  4. I LIKE that salad! Looks so much tastier than what's on my plate right now. :)

  5. One wonders what Regoch has on his plate!!

That's one very healthy salad - very impressive. And if you aren't shooting in raw then it's something I would recommend. I'm glad I took the plunge and changed and I would certianly not go back.

  7. A bit of reflection off a white card or something would be enough to fill in the bit of light you need on the blueberry. I have to say, although a bit yellow in the light, it's better than everything a bit too cyan; that's where meat starts looking putrid. So, better warm than too cold.

  8. Thank you for your comments, everyone. It really helps me.

I just started shooting raw + JPG recently, but haven't tried processing a raw file yet. I downloaded the Adobe raw converter last night, so maybe this weekend I can do something with it.

I didn't realize you can use a white card as a reflector. I'll have to try that.

Good to know about warm/cold on food.

I'm not so hot at white balancing in camera, either. I did set it before this shot, but obviously didn't do it right.

    The salad was delicious! :)

  9. I always put the camera white balance on auto and adjust it when needed in Lightroom. Works perfectly for me.

  11. Very tasty salad! I can sympathise with you and your white balance. I have used the white card for a while and it works great.
