Day 29: The Old Red Courthouse

Day 29:  Post-Processing, HDR

I thought I'd do an architecture photo to make up for the one that wasn't architectural enough.  Of course, I had to apply another technique to it for it to count, so I did HDR.  I'm not at all sure I have the hang of HDR yet, but I do know that the result looks much better than any of the three originals.  It would be a whole lot easier with HDR software.  ;)

This is the Old Red Courthouse in downtown Dallas, TX.  It was finally retired as a courthouse a few years ago, and is now a museum.  It's located right down by Dealy Plaza, home of the infamous grassy knoll and 6th floor book depository.

  1. This is a great architectural shot, and I think the lighting on that building looks great! If you used the HDR technique to brighten up the shadow areas, which it looks like you must have done in that very glaring light, then you did a great job to bring back the details without turning this into an overdone comic-book-looking image that some HDR can be. Excellent work!

  2. Yay! :D Yes, that's exactly what I was trying to do. It was extremely sunny, and I was out there at about 2 pm. Terrible time to take great photos, like the "portraits" I tried to get of the Egyptians celebrating. The original photos were very flat-looking, and I think the final product now has dimension.

  3. You did well to get rid of strong shadows if you took this at 2 pm , as the sun is very strong at that time and sure on this day with such a clear sky. I would have like to see the clock tower included, so would have loved this to be in a vertical orientation.

  5. Nice one! The shadow details have been bought out nicely. I like the frame filling shot and crop you have chosen.

  6. Great shot. And I very much like the composition you chose to use. The courthouse looks great against the lovely blue sky.

  7. This is actually my second attempt. I think it turned out better than my first, which I posted last week in the "What Did You Shoot Today?" thread. That one looks way better on my screen in the large version. This one looks almost the same in the small version, so it worked out better.

I would have liked to have the clock tower in there, too, but unfortunately I missed the very top in this shot, and then once I got done with a couple rounds of perspective correction and slight rotations, I had to crop the rest off. I was hoping no one would notice. ;) I tried cropping the whole thing off, but then I lost the pointy roof below it.
