Day 21: Ladder

Day 21:  Post-Processing, Inversion

Today I went outside to take pictures of our glorious snow.  As soon as I laid eyes on this ladder with the snow in my yard below and the snow on my neighbor's roof above, I thought, "Inversion!"  (Restaining my fence is definitely on my list of things to do next summer.  :o   )

To make sure I practiced the other kind of inversion, where the colors are flipped, here's the same photo, now both flipped upside down and with inverted colors.  I also reframed it.  :)

  1. Well, I have to be honest, I can't see exactly what or how this ladder is arranged on, and I even pulled it into PS to invert it back to original to see what it looks like there.

And I STILL can't figure it out, but you know, who cares?

It's a wonderfully graphic image, and probably way more interesting BECAUSE I can't figure it out. Too wonderful for words. Very well done!

  2. Kim, I think the 'inversion' you're thinking of is different than here :) This one the photo itself is inverted (flipped upside down) not inverted colors. Atleast that is how I see it.

It's a very cool shot though flipped since the snow and the sky match. I'm thinking the 'inversion' they were talking about in the list is inverted colors.

  3. Oh. I looked around on the internet to figure out which one it was, and I didn't get a clear answer. I went with flipping. I'll post a second one that's inverted both ways. :)

  4. Oh, I know you were to invert it, but I so like the original. I think it could pop more if you played with the levels a bit.. brightening up the orange and giving it a bit of contrast, but it's gorgeous as a composition. I love it. Well done!

  5. This is really a great shot. I love the composition and the mystery of figuring out what it is.

  6. AHA! Flipped upside down! I geddit now! I think next time we do this, I shall be more specific and say it's the inversion process in post-processing, but I will also add Upside-Down and Sideways to the Composition Group (just thought of that!).

I also prefer the original colours of this, and now that I know what it is, the magic is gone! No, just kidding. It's still just as beautiful, and seriously effective both ways round. It's the piles of snow that were ON TOP of the ladder that looked like shadows to me when presented BELOW the ladder. When inverted they would go white, as they appear in the original posting. Yet, the rest didn't look inverted. I was soooo confused. (We don't see piles of snow on stuff around here often.)

But now it is all clear, and I do apologise for the ambiguity of the word 'inverted'. Note to self: 10,000 lashings at dawn!

  7. Kim, Kim, Kim! Cut the lashings! I'm sure everyone but me got it. It's just my blond hair getting in the way. ;) Anyway, now I have experience at using the Invert feature of post-processing and turning a photo upside down. Way cool!

I'm sorry for confusing you in the first place.

  8. Great inversions. The top one reminds me of chocolate while the bottom one looks very much like the ladder is on top of a tin roof at midnight with the moonlight shining on it.

  9. I like the top one. I has a surreal quality to it. It looks normal but there is a little something "wrong" with it. Well done!

  11. I like the slightly off feeling the first one gives me.

  12. We don't see piles of snow around here much, either. We had lots this year, I think the most in the 32 years I've been in Texas.

  13. Snow isn't something I would think of in relation to Texas. Makes a change I suppose....
Anyway love the original photo, very strong graphically and creative.

  14. I was so worried when I saw your second post, I feared you were using the same photo two days, and you would be out. I was so glad when I saw what you were doing!!
